Unemployment Woes

15 12 2008 Autor: Administrator

The current economic slowdown has many people getting laid-off from their jobs with their companies unable to cope with the unstable economy. Most people benefit from their jobs not only for the regular pay they get but for the coverage they get from Employer provided Health Care which automatically ends upon leaving the firm. Without it, most who cannot afford HMO policies are left high and dry with most falling in between the void of over-qualification for state sponsored but under qualified for private health care systems.
The passing of the SCHIP bill which expands coverage for more children by as much as 200% from previous coverage, lessens the gap in the health care system which is hoping for more reforms to the system again allowing most Americans the benefit of having proper access to health care. Jobs are still being lost and more and more people are losing their ability to get proper health care during this recession which many see no end to in the near future.

What Is An HMO Plan ?

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans usually help the insured to incur lesser out-of-pocket expenditures but are also less flexible in their options for doctors and medical institutions compared to other health insurance providers. Being an HMO member, you are obligated to choose a primary care physician (PCP) who will be in charge of your healthcare needs. You will also need the referral/approval of your PCP before you can consult a specialist. You will probably have more coverage for a wider spectrum of preventive healthcare services with an HMO than with another type of plan. More often than not, you will not need to pay a deductible before coverage commences and your co-payments are lesser. Normally, with an HMO plan, you will not submit your own claim to the insurance provider. But remember also that services or procedures done by non network providers or for services or procedures done without a proper referral from your PCP, the insurance provider will not shoulder the costs for those.

Most people are not aware that their health care may have a lot of limitations embedded in the fine print. Usually, we are only made aware of it after having availed of a treatment that we thought was covered, only to end up footing the bill ourselves. Before deciding on one provider, be sure to examine all the benefits you will be entitled to get. And please, don’t forget to read the fine print!

Most insurers have accredited hospitals and medical providers in their network. These are the providers whose services you can use that are totally covered by the insurer. Those not on the list would have to be paid for from your own pocket. You should also check which illnesses are covered, and the limit per illness. Most insurers have a list of “dreaded diseases” that they will only cover up to a certain amount, the rest would be up to you.

There are a lot of people clamoring for more affordable health insurance because they know it’s important to them. However, with the recent increase in basic commodities, some have totally forgone paying for any health insurance. However, there’s hope for some people in Florida.

There’s a new law signed last Wednesday by Gov. Charlie Crist that lets insurance firms to offer a basic package for health plans without the usual required coverages. The good news? It might just cost Floridians $150 a month.

“It is not the Cadillac of health plans, but it offers something very, very important for the citizens of our state,” the governor said. Shrinking the number of people in Florida without health insurance, now about 3.8 million, has been one of Crist’s top priorities.
