Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans usually help the insured to incur lesser out-of-pocket expenditures but are also less flexible in their options for doctors and medical institutions compared to other health insurance providers. Being an HMO member, you are obligated to choose a primary care physician (PCP) who will be in charge of your healthcare needs. You will also need the referral/approval of your PCP before you can consult a specialist. You will probably have more coverage for a wider spectrum of preventive healthcare services with an HMO than with another type of plan. More often than not, you will not need to pay a deductible before coverage commences and your co-payments are lesser. Normally, with an HMO plan, you will not submit your own claim to the insurance provider. But remember also that services or procedures done by non network providers or for services or procedures done without a proper referral from your PCP, the insurance provider will not shoulder the costs for those.
